EXHIBITION DESCRIPTION

 Broad Spectrum IV: Evolutions was juried by renowned American-born, Canadian-based artist, Fuzzy Mall. The exhibition highlights the diversity of inspiration and style of techniques in 40 art quilts created by MT/ID Studio Art Quilt Associates artists. Each art quilt is dynamic in its artistic quality and offers a great view into a tradition that has blended fine craft with fine art. 

The Carbon County Arts Guild share’s the vision of Studio Art Quilts Associates (SAQA) which is to represent art quilts as a respected fine art medium where artists make creative visual work that is “layered and stitched” or their work references the form of a “stitched and layered structure.” Pieces are created using a variety of materials including hand-dyed fabric, commercial fabric, fabric paint, metallic thread, embroidery floss, and beads. 

A variety of techniques are also used to express the artists meanings, images, and experiences evoked through the theme, Evolutions. Such techniques include machine stitching, hand-stitching, applique, snow-dyeing, trapunto, mono-printing and other surface design techniques. This art form lends itself to interesting options for gallery talks such as historical use of quilts as a functional item to how contemporary artists use quilting techniques as an art form for creative expression. Quilting workshops and classes for all ages are an ideal way to explore shapes, color, pattern, composition, stitching, and self-expression. 

Juror Biographical Sketch: Fuzzy Mall is known for his large-scale applique portraiture where he focuses on breaking the traditional rules of quilting by searching for new forms with every new series he creates. Through his work Wall explores technology and modernity. Mall has won numerous awards and grants across North America including Fiberart International, Quilts=Art=Quilts, CraftForms, and Canada Council for the Arts. He has been published in five continents, and he often says, “his real reward is getting to make his next piece.”
